Nadia’s Initiative Statement on the Escalating Conflict in the Middle East

Nadia’s Initiative is deeply alarmed by the escalating military conflict in Iran and across the broader Middle East. We mourn every civilian life lost and are especially concerned about the disproportionate toll war takes on women, girls, and vulnerable communities.

History has shown that armed conflict fuels conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV), shatters communities, and leaves survivors waiting years — even decades — for justice that may never come. This pattern is not inevitable. It reflects a failure of political will to protect civilians and uphold international humanitarian law.

We are also disturbed by widely reported accounts of an attack on a girls’ school in southern Iran, where students and educators were reportedly killed. While full details are still emerging and require independent verification, any harm to civilians — especially children — demands urgent, impartial investigation and accountability.

This conflict is already bringing immense suffering to the people of Iran. For years, Iranians have shown extraordinary courage in the face of violence and repression. Their voices must not be overshadowed by the politics of war.

Across the wider region, communities have endured decades of war. Another cycle of violence will not protect civilians — it will only create more widows, more orphans, and more survivors waiting for justice. Escalation will not bring lasting security — it will only deepen suffering and regional instability.

Nadia Murad, Founder and President of Nadia’s Initiative, said:

“Growing up in Iraq, I witnessed one war after another. The 2003 invasion brought immense pain and instability, and the years that followed devastated communities like mine.

We cannot continue to normalize civilian suffering as inevitable. The protection of innocent lives, especially children, and respect for international law must be non-negotiable.

The international community must act with urgency and unity to prevent further escalation and protect those most at risk.”

Nadia’s Initiative reiterates its unwavering commitment to protecting civilians, advancing justice for survivors of CRSV, and upholding international humanitarian law.
