Nadia Murad Meets European Parliament Leaders to Advance Justice and Support for Survivors

On 4 February 2026, Nadia Murad met with Roberta Metsola at the European Parliament in Brussels for high-level discussions on justice, accountability, and support for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence.

The meeting brought together key parliamentary leaders, including David McAllister, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET); Mounir Satouri, Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI); Terry Reintke, Co-Chair of the Greens/European Free Alliance political group; and Vice-President Sophie Wilmès. Together, they explored ways the European Union can strengthen its efforts to advance justice for Yazidis and reinforce protection for vulnerable communities affected by war and persecution.

Central to the discussion was accountability for the genocide committed by ISIS against the Yazidi people in Iraq and through which mechanisms justice for survivors and support to ongoing investigations and legal proceedings can be ensured. The sustainable and voluntary return of thousands of Yazidis who remain displaced in camps was also raised as a priority, alongside the need for long-term reconstruction and security guarantees in their home regions.

Another key focus was the EU’s role in supporting victims of conflict-related sexual violence and human trafficking. Leaders reaffirmed their shared responsibility to protect human rights, combat impunity, and strengthen resilience among affected communities.
