“We must challenge the notion that certain groups matter more than others”

Our Work

Supporting community-driven and survivor-centric sustainable development programs

Nadia’s Initiative is uniquely positioned to facilitate the re-development of Sinjar due to its extensive knowledge and understanding of the political, cultural, and economic complexities of the region. Nadia’s Initiative brings a comprehensive peace-building approach to the process of rebuilding and recognizes that reconstruction efforts must be developed locally - local solutions to local problems. This type of approach will empower survivors and re-establish a sense of community in the region. Nadia’s Initiative strongly believes in making survivors, particularly women and children, an active voice in the peace-building process.

Areas of Focus

women-video

Women

We advocate to help female survivors and to support their families and communities. We do so by designing sustainable development projects that are female centric and target survivors in the Sinjar region. We work to provide reparations to survivors globally and seek justice and accountability of their perpetrators. We also advocate for global gender equality through the promotion of legislation protecting and promoting women’s rights.

education-video

Education

We recognize the importance education plays in the long-term development and healing of communities recovering from genocide. We work with foreign and local NGOs to build, rehabilitate, and staff primary, intermediate, and secondary schools throughout the Sinjar region to enable access to education for child returnees and incentivize the return of those still displaced.

Health

Access to health care is a basic human right. We work with foreign and local NGOs to rehabilitate Primary Health Centers throughout the Sinjar region, to build a new Operating Theater, and to design and construct an entirely new comprehensive Sinjar Hospital to cover all medical needs in the region.

livelihoods-video

Livelihoods

We work to revitalize Sinjar’s agriculture industry by providing comprehensive rehabilitation to farms and farming households - restoring one of the main sources of livelihoods for the Yazidi community.

wash-video

WASH

We work across the Sinjar region to provide WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services to farms, villages, clinics, and schools.

demining.jpg

De-Mining

In 2014, ISIS deployed improved explosive devices and landmines on an industrial scale in Iraq. ISIS targeted vast areas of agricultural lands around villages, as well as key infrastructure. Explosives were placed in peoples’ homes, schools, and medical facilities. We work to de-mine more than 2.6 million square meters of land in Sinjar.

Justice

We work with international human rights lawyers and the United Nations to bring ISIS militants to court for crimes against Yazidis, including genocide, human trafficking, mass executions, sexual enslavement, recruitment of child soldiers, and forced displacement.

safety-video

Safety

We work with national governments to relocate the most vulnerable Yazidis - widows and their minor children. We also work with the Kurdistan Regional Government and Government of Iraq to resolve security issues in Sinjar to enable the safety of returnees to the region.
