Statement: Nadia Murad calls on German government to halt Yazidi deportations one year after the country formally recognized the Yazidi genocide

A year ago this week, the German parliament made an important decision by officially recognizing the Yazidi genocide at the hands of ISIS in 2014. That decision gave renewed hope to Yazidis across the world, especially the Yazidi diaspora in Germany. Many Yazidis, especially survivors of genocide and sexual violence, hoped that this decision would mean more sympathy and support for the Yazidi community.
However, in the months since this decision was taken, the federal government of Germany and some local governments have refused asylum applications for thousands of Yazidis living in Germany and forcibly deported tens of Yazidis from Germany to Iraq. Some of the families and individuals who were deported have lived in Germany for years and consider it their home.
The federal government's decision to deport refugees and asylum seekers is particularly troubling, especially after the country officially recognized the genocide, murder, and enslavement of Yazidis by ISIS in Iraq in 2014.
I call upon the German government to immediately halt the deportation of Yazidis and to grant asylum to those seeking refuge in the country. The Yazidi community has endured immense suffering, both during the genocide and in the aftermath. Many refugees are also survivors of enslavement and conflict-related sexual violence.
For many years, Germany has been a steadfast friend to our traumatized community, offering shelter and taking judicial action against ISIS terrorists. Deporting Yazidis now, breaking up families, and forcing displaced people back to a country in which they feel unsafe is neither just nor compassionate. It contradicts the stance Germany has taken thus far.

Ein Jahr nach der offiziellen Anerkennung des Völkermords an den Jesiden fordert Nadia Murad die Bundesregierung auf, die Abschiebung von Jesiden zu stoppen
Der Deutsche Bundestag hat vor einem Jahr den Völkermord an den Jesiden durch den sogenannten Islamischen Staat im Jahr 2014 offiziell anerkannt. Diese Entscheidung gab den Jesiden auf der ganzen Welt neue Hoffnung, insbesondere der jesidischen Diaspora in Deutschland. Viele Jesiden hofften, dass diese Entscheidung die Sympathie und Unterstützung für die jesidische Gemeinschaft stärken würde.
Die Bundesregierung und einige Kommunalverwaltungen haben in den Monaten nach dieser Entscheidung jedoch die Asylanträge Tausender in Deutschland lebender Jesiden abgelehnt und Dutzende Jesiden gewaltsam in den Irak abgeschoben. Einige Familien und Einzelpersonen, die abgeschoben wurden, lebten seit Jahren in Deutschland und betrachten es als ihre Heimat.
Die Entscheidung der Bundesregierung, Flüchtlinge und Asylsuchende abzuschieben, obwohl Deutschland offiziell den Völkermord von 2014 an den Jesiden im Irak anerkannt hat, ist besorgniserregend.
Ich fordere die deutsche Regierung auf, die Abschiebung von Jesiden unverzüglich zu stoppen und denjenigen, die im Land Zuflucht suchen, Asyl zu gewähren. Während des Völkermords und danach hat die jesidische Gemeinschaft unermessliches Leid erfahren. Viele Flüchtlinge sind Überlebende von Versklavung und konfliktbedingter sexueller Gewalt.
Deutschland hat unsere traumatisierte Gemeinschaft seit vielen Jahren unterstützt, Schutz geboten und ist gerichtlich gegen IS-Terroristen vorgegangen. Es ist weder gerecht noch mitfühlend, Jesiden abzuschieben, Familien zu zerreißen und Vertriebene in ein Land zurückzuschicken, in dem sie sich nicht sicher fühlen. Dies widerspricht der Haltung, die Deutschland bisher eingenommen hat.
