Statement from Nadia’s Initiative on the Sentencing of ISIS member ‘Nadine K’

In a milestone decision, the Higher Regional Court of Koblenz convicted German national ‘Nadine K.’ She was accused of aiding and abetting genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. She was participated in the enslavement and abuse of a young Yazidi woman during ISIS’ brutal campaign to eradicate the Yazidi religious minority. The 37-year-old former ISIS member has been given a sentence of 9 years and 3 months in prison.

Nadia Murad, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, and founder of Nadia’s Initiative said:

“I am heartened to see Nadine K held to account for the appalling part she played in the Yazidi genocide, and the enslavement and sexual abuse of a Yazidi woman. The survivor’s bravery as she testified against the woman who kept her captive for five years was awe-inspiring. Every one of us deserves to see our abusers in court, and every abuser deserves to face justice.”

This marks the third conviction of an ISIS member for genocide perpetrated against the Yazidi community in Iraq and Syria since August 2014. However, there are thousands more ISIS fighters and members still to be held to account. It is imperative that they are not allowed to evade justice.

Nadi Murad said:

“Germany is showing the world that ISIS can be prosecuted, and I urge other countries to follow its lead.”
