Nadia Murad meets U.S. Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken

Nadia Murad met recently with the U.S. Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken. As the 10th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide approaches, the pair discussed the importance of holding the perpetrators to account. Nadia highlighted the need for justice, not just for the Yazidi victims and survivors of ISIS atrocities, but for all victims of conflict-related sexual violence. She stressed the critical role the U.S. can play in promoting meaningful action in this area, including through diplomatic efforts aimed at the renewal of the UNITAD mandate in Iraq. She also noted the importance of providing a judicial deterrent to like-minded groups, telling the Secretary that impunity cannot be an option.

As Nadia’s Initiative continues in its mission to rebuild the Yazidi homeland of Sinjar, Nadia urged the U.S. to consider long-term investment in rebuilding and rehabilitation. She shared that the political and security challenges faced by Yazidis and other minority communities in Iraq remain a critical barrier for returnees.  Beyond Iraq, Nadia highlighted the growing number of displaced people in conflict regions around the world and encouraged the U.S. to work with international partners on providing more sustainable solutions for these communities.
